Amazon to create thousands of UK jobs

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994. Amazon was launched in the UK over 20 years ago. Currently, there are over 50 Amazon sites across the UK. In the past 5 years Amazon has quadrupled its workforce from 10,000 to 40,000. They are one of the fastest growing companies around the world in one of the biggest industries, online shopping.

So far in 2020 Amazon have added 3,000 roles. Meaning the company has created a total of 10,000 new jobs. With the permanent new jobs it will now take Amazons UK workforce to over 40,000. Amazon have stated that the new jobs will be permanent and pay a minimum of £9.50 an hour. With the Christmas period being the busiest for all retail businesses. Amazon are also recruited 20,000 placements over the busy period.

During the pandemic, many high street shops closed either temporarily or permanently and consumers moving to online shopping, online giants Amazon benefited from this massively. The latest retail sales figures showed that UK online sales in July were more than 50% higher than pre-pandemic levels in February. Amazon took on thousands of temporary workers during the pandemic, and it says many of them will now be able to move into these new permanent roles.
